Mellissa at Shakesville states that homophobia in men comes from the fear that homosexual men will treat them the same way that they treat women.

 As my wonderful professor once said “They’re afraid of the gaze (gays?).”

Seriously though, its really scary to think about how (some) men at least subconsiously understand that they don’t treat women well, but they don’t think to do anything about it. Patriarchy at its finest.
