what do you think of Sherlock's sexuality? I imagine him being asexual, it feels like it fits but I haven't read the original stories or anything — Asked by Anonymous

OH HOW I LOVE THIS QUESTION.

These are just my opinions of course but..

Yes! I agree with you; asexual.. and maybe slightly leaning towards being curious about men, but not acting on it.

I think Moffat’s logic is flawed, he claims Sherlock is interested in women but doesn’t want to be ’distracted’ by them (ugh) ..But Holmes is also a drug addict, so this idea of someone so committed and professional doesn’t really fit for me. He has his vices and indulgences.

I think Holmes has Watson around to sort of test his sexuality.. or as a squish. Holmes is a lot nicer to Watson in the books.

I think what the BBC Sherlock series has (somewhat) failed to do is show how flawed/human Sherlock Holmes is. He is portrayed, for the most part, as untouchable and infallible, which is probably why Irene Adler wasn’t allowed as complete a victory as she should have been. But I think this is probably down to the limited time/number of episodes. It would be hard to set someone up as that smart and then deconstruct that without it seeming abrupt and clumsy.

Obviously there is nothing explicitly gay or asexual in the original stories, but neither is there anything explicitly hetero… and i sort of have to question that, because there easily could have been, so why wasn’t there?

There is a profound loneliness to Holmes, but his isolation is a choice. And to dismiss the idea that the one person he chooses to treat as an equal, the one person he chooses to let into his life could mean something more to him seems.. wrong.
